About cold therapy and ice baths
Cold water immersion is simple to describe and easy to get wrong. The two variables that matter are how cold the water is and how long you stay in it, and they trade off against each other: colder water needs less time, not more. Most people start far too cold for far too long, have a miserable session, and never come back. Starting at a temperature you can breathe normally in, for a duration you can finish calmly, builds the tolerance that makes the harder sessions useful later. Controlled breathing is the skill that makes all of it manageable.
Ice bath: common questions
How cold should the water be?
For most healthy adults, 10–15°C is a sensible starting band and 3–10°C is where regular plungers settle. The number matters less than being able to control your breathing — if you are gasping, the water is too cold for where you are right now.
How long should I stay in?
Two to five minutes covers most of what people are after, and total weekly exposure matters more than any single heroic session. Get out if you stop shivering, lose feeling in your hands or feet, or feel light-headed.
