Crocpad’s Lake mat safety articles — choosing, using and looking after a floating water mat.
You will find sizing against how many people actually use it, how drop-stitch construction and foam density change the way a mat sits in the water, anchoring, storage and the care that decides whether it lasts one summer or several. Safety guidance here is specific rather than general — what to check before use, what to supervise during it, and the failure modes worth planning for.

About floating water mats
Size is the decision people most often get wrong, in both directions. Too small and it is a novelty that one person lies on; too large and it is a two-person job to move, awkward to store and unwieldy on anything but flat water. Count the people who will realistically be on it at once, add one, and buy for that. Then think hard about where it lives between uses — UV and heat do more damage to a mat left out all season than any amount of use, and a mat stored wet is a mat you will be scrubbing in spring.
Lake mat safety: common questions
What size water mat should I get?
Count the people who will genuinely be on it at the same time and add one. Most families are well served by a mid-size mat they can deploy single-handed, rather than the largest one that needs two adults to move and a shed to store.
Can adults stand on a floating mat?
On a stiff, correctly inflated mat, yes — that is largely what you are paying for. Soft or under-inflated mats fold under adult weight, which is why foam density and inflation pressure matter more than the dimensions.
