The night before a game, with heavy legs and an ice bath on the patio — get in or not? The day before is one of the safest times to use cold water, and often a helpful one. The real problems belong to match day, and to the strength block you are trying to protect.

About recovery and performance

Timing separates recovery tools that help from ones that quietly work against you. Cold immersion is genuinely useful when the next session matters more than the last one: tournament days, back-to-back fixtures, heavy conditioning blocks, in-season weeks where you need to be functional tomorrow. It is a worse choice in the half hour after heavy strength work, where the inflammatory response you are cooling off is part of the adaptation you just paid for. Same tool, opposite effect, depending entirely on what you are training for that month.

Footy: common questions

Should I ice bath after every session?

No. Use it when being functional for the next session matters more than maximising adaptation from the last one — match days, back-to-back fixtures, heavy in-season weeks. On strength and hypertrophy days, leave a few hours or skip it.

Does it actually help, or does it just feel good?

Both, honestly. The evidence for reduced perceived soreness and faster return to feeling ready is reasonable; the evidence for faster tissue repair is much weaker. Feeling ready to train is not nothing, as long as you know which one you are buying.
