About dog ramps and water safety for pets

A dog that can get into water it cannot get out of is the risk a ramp exists to remove. Dogs do not reason their way out of a pool; they swim the edge looking for the place they got in. That is why position matters more than product — a ramp on the far side from where your dog enters is a ramp they will not find. Train it as the exit while everything is calm and dry, with treats and no pressure, so the route is already known by the time it is needed in a hurry.

Dog friendly boating: common questions

How do I train my dog to use a ramp?

Start dry and shallow, lead them up and down with treats, keep the sessions short, and never push a nervous dog. Repeat it as the normal exit route for a week or two so it is habit before it is ever needed in an emergency.

Where should the ramp go?

Where your dog naturally gets in, or as close to it as the pool shape allows. A dog in difficulty swims the edge near its entry point, so a ramp on the opposite side is unlikely to be found.
