About dry bags and keeping gear dry

Think in layers rather than one big bag. A single large dry bag is convenient right up until you need the one thing at the bottom, at which point you have opened the seal in spray with everything exposed. Small bags for the things that must stay dry — phone, keys, wallet, a spare set of clothes — inside a larger bag, means one failure is not total. Rinse salt water off the fabric and the buckles after a trip and dry it open; salt crystals in a roll-top are what wear a seal out.

Waterproof bags: common questions

Is a dry bag fully waterproof?

A properly rolled dry bag keeps contents dry through spray, rain and brief submersion. It is not a dive case — sustained depth and pressure are a different problem, and valuables like phones are worth a dedicated case inside the bag.

What size dry bag do I need?

Smaller than you think, in more of them. A 10–20L bag covers a day on the water for one person; splitting kit across several small bags beats one large one you have to open in the weather.
