About water safety
Supervision fails at handover, not at the start. Everyone is watching for the first twenty minutes; the gap opens when one adult assumes another has taken over and nobody has actually said so out loud. Naming a person who is watching the water, and naming the person who takes it on when they step away, prevents more incidents than any piece of equipment. Add the structural checks — depth, clear run-outs, anchor points, no hard edges where someone lands — and almost everything that goes wrong has already been designed out.
Water safety: common questions
What should I check before anyone gets in?
Depth, the surface and clearance around the landing area, every anchor or tether point, and that someone has explicitly taken on watching the water. Then set the rules — one at a time, feet first, no climbing up a slide.
Is an inflatable a flotation device?
No. Floating mats, slides and water toys are recreation equipment, not life-saving equipment. Non-swimmers and small children need a correctly fitted lifejacket and an adult within arm’s reach regardless of what they are floating on.
