About cold therapy and ice baths

Where cold therapy sits in your week matters as much as the plunge itself. Immediately after heavy resistance training, cold immersion appears to blunt some of the adaptation you just trained for, so it suits rest days, conditioning blocks and competition schedules better than the half hour after a hypertrophy session. Around sleep, an evening plunge works well for some people and wrecks others. None of this is settled science, and anyone claiming certainty is overselling — the honest position is that the practice is safe for most healthy adults within sensible limits, and worth experimenting with against your own training.

Ice bath wellness: common questions

How cold should the water be?

For most healthy adults, 10–15°C is a sensible starting band and 3–10°C is where regular plungers settle. The number matters less than being able to control your breathing — if you are gasping, the water is too cold for where you are right now.

How long should I stay in?

Two to five minutes covers most of what people are after, and total weekly exposure matters more than any single heroic session. Get out if you stop shivering, lose feeling in your hands or feet, or feel light-headed.
